01Reconnect the display path before changing settings
Start with the hardware state, because every later setting depends on it. Wake the monitor, connect the dock or cable, and make sure the monitor is on the input the Mac is actually using. If the same monitor also has a Windows PC, game console, or second Mac attached, this is where many false problems start.
Apple's external-display guidance puts the basics in the same order: connect the display, use the right cable or adapter, and then configure the display from macOS. The exact number of external displays depends on the Mac model. A utility app should not be your first explanation when the base connection is not stable.

02Set the monitor state before opening work apps
Once the display is detected, decide the room state before your apps start moving windows. Are you mirroring or extending? Which screen is the main display? Is the resolution sharp enough? Is the refresh rate safe for the cable path? Is the color profile the expected one?
Apple's Displays settings cover arrangement, mirror or extend, main-display behavior, resolution, brightness where available, color profile, and refresh rate. Some options appear only for certain Mac models or connected displays, so the absence of a control is not always a bug.

03Use presets for repeated desks, not mystery fixes
A preset is good when the same desk state repeats. Work mode at 80 percent brightness. Night mode at 35 percent. A shared-monitor mode that switches the input back to USB-C after the other computer used HDMI. A call mode that lowers a bright side monitor.
A preset is bad when you have not found the cause yet. If a cable only works at one refresh rate, if the monitor looks washed out, or if input switching fails from the wrong source, saving a preset can hide the real problem.

04Choose sound output after the display is connected
Do the audio reset after the display is connected, not before. External monitors, TVs, docks, HDMI paths, USB audio devices, headphones, and AirPlay targets can all change what macOS lists as an output device.
Apple's Sound settings page says to open Sound, click Output, and select the device you want. It also notes that app volume controls are limited by the computer's output volume. That matters: if the Mac chose monitor speakers and you lower a browser tab, the browser may be quieter on the wrong device.

Per-app audio is a source-level tool. Use it when the system output is correct and one app still needs different treatment: a browser that is too loud, a music app that should stay low during writing, a meeting app that should use headphones, or a recording app that should hear a specific source.
