Mac research workspace setup for monitor and text checks

Research work gets slow when the source page, notes, copied snippets, and review output keep changing places. Set the screen layout first, then clean the text before it spreads.

The short answer: put source material on one side, the draft or review surface on the other, use macOS Displays settings to make that layout predictable, then clean copied text locally before it reaches a report, issue comment, launch note, or shared doc. Add utilities only for the parts you repeat.

01Put the source and output in fixed places

A research workspace should reduce re-orientation. Put the source material where it will stay: browser, PDF, documentation, ticket, log, or customer note. Put the output surface in the other stable place: draft, issue comment, spreadsheet, report, pull request, or review doc.

Apple's Split View is enough for a single-screen pass when the source and output are both visible. With an external monitor, start in Displays settings. Confirm whether the desktop is extended or mirrored, set the arrangement to match the physical desk, and choose the display where the menu bar, Dock, and primary apps should land.

02Use macOS for arrangement, then tune the monitor state

Use local tools for copied text when the input came from a private source. Use public web tools when the text is already public or when the task genuinely depends on live remote data. That split matters more than loyalty to any one app.

05Write the handoff in the same workspace
